Global financial markets were sent into a tailspin Thursday as a massive wave of selling erased approximately 2.5 trillion dollars in market value. The turmoil centered on the tech sector, specifically targeting companies tied to the artificial intelligence infrastructure boom. Investors reacted sharply to recent midterm election results, most notably the Democratic victory in the Texas gubernatorial race. Governor elect Gina Hinojosa has campaigned on plans to implement a temporary moratorium on data centers and scrap specific tax incentives, sparking fears that one of the world’s primary AI hubs could see its growth stunted.
The fallout was immediate and severe across multiple continents. In the United States, the Nasdaq plummeted more than five percent, marking its worst session since April 2025 and pushing the index into a formal correction. High flying names took heavy hits, with Nvidia seeing its yearly gains vanish after a nine percent drop, while Tesla and SpaceX also slid significantly. This panic spilled over into Asian markets on Friday morning, where South Korea’s Kospi crashed nearly nine percent at the opening bell, forcing an emergency twenty minute trading halt as brokers scrambled to manage the chaos.
Beyond politics, analysts suggest the crash may be a necessary correction for an industry that grew too fast for its own good. Some experts argue that the frenzy surrounding AI data centers became overly speculative and that letting some air out of the bubble now is preferable to a total collapse later. While short term traders are fleeing, some long term strategists believe these depressed prices represent a buying opportunity for those who believe in the fundamental future of AI despite political headwinds. For now, however, wall street remains on edge as evidenced by a seventy percent surge in volatility indicators.
