Global financial markets are reeling this week as a surge of Democratic victories in the U.S. midterms sparked a massive sell off in artificial intelligence stocks. Fears that a Democrat controlled Congress will introduce stricter regulations on data centers and cool the breakneck pace of AI investment sent Wall Street into a tailspin, wiping more than three trillion dollars off the U.S. stock market in a single session. The carnage was particularly brutal for chipmakers like Nvidia, AMD, and Micron, which saw double digit losses as investors scrambled for the exits.
The panic quickly spread across the Pacific, leaving Asian markets in a sea of red. Japan’s Nikkei suffered its worst weekly decline since the pandemic, while South Korea’s KOSPI plummeted enough to trigger a twenty minute circuit breaker. In Taiwan, where stocks had previously soared on the back of the AI boom, the Taiex index experienced record breaking volatility. Analysts suggest this isnt just a temporary dip but reflects a deeper fear of a structural policy shift that could stall equity capital markets and slow down infrastructure approvals for the next several years.
This sudden collapse comes at a fragile moment for big tech, with many experts warning for months that AI valuations had become unsustainably inflated. Recent earnings reports from several of the Magnificent Seven companies have already signaled that growth expectations are slipping and corporate spending on AI may be hitting a plateau. While Donald Trump claimed via social media that this was one of the worst days in history, historians note that purely percentage wise, it does not eclipse crashes like Black Monday or 2008, though the sheer amount of wealth erased remains staggering.
As European markets prepare to open under similar pressure, traders are bracing for further instability. All eyes are now turning toward upcoming U.S. employment data to see if broader economic weakness is compounding the political shockwave. With investor sentiment firmly shifted toward caution and margins being called globally, the era of unchecked optimism surrounding artificial intelligence appears to have hit a formidable wall of political reality.
